For most of the past four years Outsider has found himself surrounded by a team of young women and has therefore learned a thing or two about gender equality and, let’s be fair, workplace survival.

Therefore, he chose to wear purple to the Money Management offices last Thursday to demonstrate solidarity with his colleagues on International Women’s Day and not just because the purple (well mauve, actually) shirt was the first thing he grabbed as he prepared for another busy day in the office.

But having dressed up for the occasion, Outsider was given to reflecting that 2018 has not thus far looked like a stellar year for women in the financial services industry with none of the current chief executives of the four major banks possessing an X chromosome, and with a number of recent departures depleting some of the other tiers of female talent with people such as the Commonwealth Bank’s Annabelle Spring heading for the exit.

He was therefore greatly heartened to note the level of activity taking place in the financial planning industry including the Association of Financial Advisers “AFA Inspire” functions around the country.

Outsider, despite his gruff appearance, is all in favour of a more equal workplace, provided he is first amongst equals, that is.
