Swan to meet with international leaders
Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan will meet with foreign leaders to discuss global economic challenges at the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting and the G8 Finance Ministers’ Outreach Meeting in June.
Swan said these meetings come at a time when “the Australian economy is being buffeted by strong countervailing forces in the global economy”, including a slowing US economy and increasing Chinese demand for Australian commodities.
Swan intends to strengthen key economic relationships, particularly with China, and promote Australia’s “enduring economic stability and competitiveness”.
He will focus on the global challenges of rising food and commodity prices, financial market turbulence and climate change, among other topics.
This is only the second time an Australian Treasurer has been invited to participate in the G8 Finance Ministers’ Outreach Meeting.
