Outsider has always believed you can learn a great deal about a person by what they choose to read. So he believes he has now compartmentalised the Minister for Revenue and Financial Services, Kelly O’Dwyer.

Why and how?

Because O’Dwyer has confessed that “over Christmas I took some time to re-read Robert Menzies’ weekly radio talks during World War II”.

Now in fairness, the minister apparently re-read Menzies’ radio talks for a chapter she is writing for a forthcoming book, but her choice of summer reading does raise a number of interesting questions, not least about how under siege members of the Government currently feel.

Then again, students of history will know that Menzies found himself in the political wilderness through the years of World War II and that the profile garnered via his radio talks helped deliver him back to power through the formation of the Liberal Party.

Menzies clearly did not have to deal with shock jocks to get air time.

But does La O’Dwyer not only have the Menzies war-time talks in her backpack, but also a field marshal’s baton?
