Ex-Swan staffer gets financial services portfolio

With the superannuation sector heading into "a busy and important time", the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has congratulated Dr Jim Chalmers on his appointment as Shadow Minister for financial services and superannuation.
The Queensland MP, who succeeded Craig Emerson as the Labor candidate for the seat of Rankin in 2013, has held a number of roles within the Australian Labor Party at State and Federal level since 1997, including the role of chief-of-staff to then Treasurer, Wayne Swan, from 2010 to 2013.
Prior to being appointed as Treasurer Swan's chief-of-staff, Chalmers was Swan's principal adviser from 2007.
Congratulating Chalmers on his appointment, ASFA chief executive, Pauline Vamos said "The next few months will be a busy and important time for superannuation."
"Dr Chalmers will be served well by his previous experience as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Investment, and deputy chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Tax and Revenue," she said.
"I am looking forward to working with Dr Chalmers over the coming months.
"ASFA would also like to thank outgoing Shadow Minister the Hon Bernie Ripoll MP for his contributions to the financial services and superannuation portfolio to date, particularly through his work on the Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) reforms, and wish him all the best for his political retirement."
Prior to his appointment as Shadow Minister for financial services and superannuation, yesterday, Chalmers was Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the leader of the Opposition and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for trade and investment.
Chalmers was also been given responsibility as a shadow minister for sport and productivity, and Shadow Assistant Minister for trade and investment, as part of yesterday's shadow ministerial reshuffle.
