Boutique global equities manager Wingate Asset Management has made a key appointment to its newly-created role of head of research.

The company announced that it had appointed former London-based Hugh Selby-Smith to the role which will be based in Melbourne and report to Wingate's chief investment officer, Chad Padowitz.

The company's announcement said Selby-Smith was most recently co-portfolio manager at Omni Partners in London, where he was responsible for the firm's pan-European strategy prior to which he worked with TT International, Goldman Sachs International, Dresdner Kleinwort, and ING Barings.

Padowitz said the newly-created role added further depth to Wingate's research effort, which was the most important component of our investment strategy and offering to investors.

"Hugh brings many years of experience in research to the position, which will be invaluable. His experience as a buy-side and sell-side analyst across both the US and European markets will be particularly useful," he said.
