Tax panel appointed
The Government has appointed a panel of tax experts to examine ways of reducing delays in amending tax law while improving the legislation.
The Tax Design Review Panel will be chaired by PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ Neil Wilson and comprises Duncan Baxter of Blake Dawson and John Morgan of the Victorian bar along with representatives from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Treasury, the Australian Taxation Office and the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen said as well as addressing the delays and quality of tax law, the panel will also investigate methods to increase community input in the process.
“Delays in implementing announced changes to tax laws have been a source of frustration to taxpayers and tax professionals, not to mention the lack of certainty it creates for business investment,” Bowen said.
“Improved consultation at the earlier stages of tax law changes will result in better law.”
The public is invited to submit its views to the panel at [email protected], which will be reported to Government by April 30, 2008.
