Liam Shorte, a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) specialist adviser and financial planner from Verante Financial Planning, has been appointed to the SMSF Association board, replacing board member and prior chairman, Andrew Gale.

Shorte, who chaired the Association’s NSW Local Community since 2015, and is a member of the Magnitude Advisory Committee, would join the board in September this year.

He has over 27 years’ experience in financial services, having worked in Ireland, the UK and the Middle East, and was awarded SMSF and accounting professional of the year.

SMSF Association chairperson, Deborah Ralston, said Shorte’s practical knowledge of the sector would be of enormous value to the board and the Association.

Ralston said Shorte’s blog, The SMSF Coach, had a keen following, and the planner had established a deserved reputation as an expert in the field.

Shorte said he appreciated the Association’s enormous contribution to the policy and technical debates in the SMSF sector and said he was keen to add his voice to the collective effort.

“In particular, I am hoping that the practical lessons I have learnt since establishing my own SMSF business will afford me the opportunity to bring a practitioner’s perspective and insights to the board,” he said.
