Principal Global Investors has appointed Peter Smyth as chief operating officer and head of product, Australia.

The appointment comes after a year of solid growth in the Australian business, according to Principal Global Investors chief executive, Australia, Grant Forster.

Global property securities, emerging market equities and currency management have been particularly strong in the past 12 months, he said.

"Peter's expertise and experience in product strategy and exceptional track record managing the life cycle of products and sales activities is an asset to Principal Global Investors," Forster said.

"I am pleased to join Principal Global Investors, with its multi-asset capabilities, global scope and investment solutions," Smyth said.

Smyth makes the move from AMP Capital Investors, where he was head of product. He has also held roles at Fidelity, Perpetual and BT Funds Management.
