New chief operating officer at ANZ
ANZ has announced the appointment of Alistair Currie to the role of group chief operating officer responsible for technology, shared services and operations.
Reporting to ANZ chief executive officer Mike Smith, Currie will be responsible for boosting the delivery of the company's super regional strategy, which includes a focus on ANZ's Bangalore, Manila and Chengdu centres, property and major projects.
Currie was previously ANZ's managing director, transaction banking and institutional.
Before joining ANZ in 2008, Currie was HSBC Taiwan's president and chief executive officer. He previously held senior roles throughout Asia, the Middle East and the United States, including Wells Fargo HSBC Trade Bank's chief operating officer.
ANZ chief information officer Anne Weatherston will report to Currie and will remain a member of the company's management board, ANZ stated.
Commenting on the appointment, Smith said lower economic growth, deleveraging by consumers and business, and a greater regulatory burden required a new operating model and a new mindset throughout the business.
Currie's appointment comes amidst the departure of ANZ chief operating officer David Cartwright, who was responsible for global services and operations.
