MLC was named life insurance company of the year for the second year running at the 2009 Australia and New Zealand insurance industry awards held in Sydney last night.

The awards, now in their sixth year, were hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (the institute) and founding partner Asia Insurance Review (AIR) and recognise outstanding achievement in the Australian and New Zealand insurance marketplace.

According to the institute, judges were impressed with the levels of research undertaken by MLC and its efforts to lower the level of underinsurance in Australian small businesses.

MLC took the title ahead of finalists AMP and CommInsure.

Meanwhile, QBE chief executive Frank O’Halloran secured the insurance leader of the year award, with QBE named the winner of the Australian Treasurer’s good governance and practice award.

“The Australian Treasurer’s ongoing support of the awards with his own award for good governance is testament to the high regard and position the event holds,” the institute's chief executive, Joan Fitzpatrick, said.

“These awards showcase the good work of our industry and serve to highlight the dedication to professional excellence and the commitment to best practice that the insurance industry places upon itself,” Fitzpatrick said.
