University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will expand its alternative investments education program after signing a deal to access curricula offered by a global alternative assets education provider.

From 2014 UTS will shift its alternative asset courses from a range of separate topics into a single cohesive subject after forming a partnership with the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA).

The CAIA is a global organisation that provides professional education focused entirely on alternative investments, with UTS stating the partnership would lift the standard of advice provided to investors on alternative assets.

UTS is the second education partner in Australia with CAIA. Students studying for UTS' Master of Business in Finance will be able to access CAIA's curriculum, scholarship and support to secure the CAIA Charter designation.

UTS Business School head of finance discipline Gerhard Van de Venter said its graduates move into portfolio management, analyst and banking roles, and the new program would "skill them in the diverse strategies, risks and special characteristics of alternative investments".

"We want to equip our students so they're industry ready, and this partnership will help us deliver the most current, in-depth education in alternative investments," Van de Venter said.

In October The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) issued an updated regulatory guide on hedge funds, with ASIC chair Greg Medcraft identifying advisers, auditors and researchers as one of its key focuses in its oversight of the sector.
