Top 10 Most Influential: Pauline Vamos
THEAustralian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) Pauline Vamos says her inclusion in this year’sMoney ManagementTop 10 Most Influential list is a reflection of the contribution made by the whole of the ASIC team.
The winner of last year’s award says: “I have only been the mouthpiece and this recognition is owed to the efforts of all our team right through from policy to legal, surveillance and information technology.”
The panel, in a sense, agreed with her, saying that while Vamos was the ASIC messenger and had been very successful in communicating to the industry what was coming in the form of financial services reform (FSR), much credit should go to others who helped to create the message — namely Ian Johnston, who also features in the Most Influential list.
Vamos says that the prominence of ASIC through 2003 has hardly been surprising in circumstances where the transition to the new FSR regime has been a focal point for the entire financial services sector.
She says people who wanted a licence had no option but to deal with ASIC.
“Liaison has been incredibly important in terms of licensing and people have required a lot of face-to- face contact,” Vamos says.
She believes 2003 has been the critical year in terms of preparation for the new FSR regime but that 2004 will also be important in terms of ASIC’s dealings with the industry.
