Top 10 Most Influential: Ian Johnston
IAN Johnston has entered the Most Influential list this year as somewhat of a people’s champion.
Over the last year theAustralian Securities and Investments Commission(ASIC) director of financial services has taken his role beyond that of go-between for the industry and its regulator, to be a guiding hand and open ear during turbulent times.
The industry has been grateful for Johnston’s presence over the last year, particularly his mature approach to Financial Services Reform (FSR), which will ensure that those who should make it through the licensing process do.
Johnston has also been recognised for his efforts in driving ASIC to accept comments from the industry, and for being “appropriately flexible in addressing the teething problems and unintentional impacts of the legislation during its implementation”.
“Ian has become the face of ASIC in respect to liaison and interchange with the industry,” one nominator says.
“This has been particularly prominent in respect to the Australian Financial Services licensing regime, and may remain so after transition has finished and audit gathers pace.”
Our panel agreed that Johnston has played a big part in progressing FSR, while educating the industry and managing the licensing process.
“He’s really engaged the industry.”
