By Fiona Moore
Dr Jose Ramos-Horta will give both perspective and significance to this year’s FPA national convention theme, ‘Building Bridges — Creating Opportunity.
Winner of the 1996 Nobel Peace prize and international speaker and advocator of human rights, Dr Ramos-Horta has spent the past 25 years as spokesperson for human rights and East Timor’s independence.
His passion and dedication was rewarded in 1999 with an historic referendum that gave the East Timorese people a voice and demonstrated their desire to be independent of Indonesia.
After 25 years in exile from East Timor, Dr Ramos-Horta returned in December 1999 to help rebuild a new liberated country.
It is with this experience that he will make his presentation titled‘The impossible dream is possible’to delegates at this year’s FPA National Convention.
Ramos-Horta has a Master of Arts in Peace Studies from the Antioch University and in 1989 founded the Diplomacy Trading Program in NSW, working in international and human rights law.
IntegraTec general manager of sales and marketing and chair of this year’s organising committee convention, Nina Hope, believes Ramos-Horta will be inspirational in his message to the industry.
“The sheer adversity he has had to overcome, he’s had to build bridges. He’s looked at horrific experiences and turned it into a positive,” Hope says.
Dr Jose Ramos-Horta will present his views in the plenary session at 4.30pm on Friday.
