The Institute of Chartered Accountants has launched a new GST CD-ROM kit to educate financial advisers in their role as managers of small to medium sized enterprises.

The kit, GST Answers, has been developed with Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu and is designed to be a fast and efficient GST learning tool, says institute president Rob Atkinson.

“It is important to fund time to get up to speed with GST,” he says. “GST Answers has been developed as a module-based training aid.”

The number of modules a person works through depends on their role in the organisation. A financial officer would work through all modules whereas a bookkeeper might only need a few. Each module takes about 45 minutes.

At present all the GST legislation has not been passed by Parliament and Atkinson says updates to the kit will be issued as the new requirements become law.

Atkinson says SMEs are not grasping the complexity of GST at present and are seriously under-prepared for the new tax system.

“Unfortunately, many business people are not paying attention to the new tax changes and are seriously under-prepared,” he says.
