The big banking group said that Smith would be succeeded by current chief financial officer, Shayne Elliott, on 1 January.
Elliott, 51, is currently ANZ's chief financial officer responsible for all aspects of finance as well as group strategy, legal, Treasury, investor relations, and mergers and acquisitions.
