The Financial Services Council (FSC) recognised the contribution of workers in the life insurance sector at its annual Life Insurance Awards gala night dinner last night in Sydney, calling recent times challenging for industry professionals.

The awards night kicked off the FSC’s Life Insurance Conference for 2017, which would be held at Darling Harbour in Sydney on 30 March.

At the gala dinner, FSC chief executive Sally Loane said the five awards presented were testament to solid progress made across the industry in 2016.

“Much has been achieved in the last 12 months and this awards celebration is a fitting way to kick off what looks set to be a highly engaging conference program,” Loane said.

“These awards highlight the considerable number of talented and dedicated people in the industry who are facing these challenges head on.

“The life insurance industry is pressing ahead with vital and far-reaching consumer reforms amid a period of heightened public scrutiny.”

MLC general manager of retail advice, Russell Hannah, was awarded the Industry Mentor Award, while the 2017 Industry Leader Award was presented to BT Financial Group's head of life operations, Scott Moffitt.

BT Financial Group was also the winner for its "Measuring Health Outcomes" submission for the Industry Research Award, whilst the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) was highly recommended for its "Back to Wellness Program."

AIA head of retail risk, optimisation and compliance, Kathleen Williams, was awarded the Young Achiever of the Year, and first joined AIA from the Dispute Resolution Office in 2011. AIA was also named the winner in the Consumer Innovation category, for its "Vitality" offering, ahead of AMP's "MyLife", which was highly commended.
