The Financial Services Council (FSC) has cited the views of a number of Australian Labor Party and trade union luminaries as being opposed to the sort of superannuation tax changes being canvassed by the Federal Government in the May Budget.

FSC chief executive John Brogden has cited the views of former Australian Council of Trade Unions Secretary Bill Kelty, former Hawke Government Finance Minister Peter Walsh and former Financial Services Minister, Senator Nick Sherry as having spoken against tinkering with the superannuation tax settings.

He said these voices could be added to the broader voice of the financial services industry in opposing any changes to superannuation in the May Budget.

Brogden then sought to set a deadline for the Government to come clean on its policy intentions, stating that by the time the Parliament resumed on 12 March the FSC would be seeking "a clear and unequivocal statement from the Government that there will be no tax increases or negative changes to superannuation in the May Budget".

"In this election year, we look to Government and Opposition to adopt a bipartisan approach to superannuation," he said. "Australia's future fiscal stability, our economic growth and the security of Australians' retirement depends on it."

The FSC had announced earlier yesterday that it had joined with the relatively newly-formed SMSF Owners' Alliance to pursue the campaign against further superannuation tax changes.
