The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has welcomed a new draft report that calls for better consumer protection policies.

The report, released by the Productivity Commission, focuses on greater consumer empowerment through more workable regulations and reforms to information disclosure requirements. It follows submissions made by ASFA to the commission’s inquiry into Australia’s consumer policy framework.

Commenting on the report, ASFA chief Pauline Vamos said poorly designed and complex information disclosure has been a barrier to effective decision-making by consumers.

“ASFA is a long-time advocate of effective and meaningful disclosure. Many of ASFA’s members have been proactive in ensuring that information, fund features and guidance is delivered and disclosed more effectively to fund members. This disclosure and delivery could be even better with a more appropriate information disclosure regulatory framework,” Vamos said.
