Tax accountant H&R Block said more taxpayers are using tax agents to lodge returns even though around 500,000 tax payers have been removed from the tax system since the tax free threshold went up last year.

H&R Block regional director Frank Brass said clients find tax agents helpful in dealing with changing tax laws and tax return forms, navigating through the ATO's website and MyGov, and the penalties of audits if mistakes are made.

Around seven million taxpayers have received $15 billion worth of refunds.
