A survey conducted by the Bank of New Zealand Australia (BNZA) has revealed that business people running small to medium-sized enterprises most value advice from accountants and mentors.

However, the survey, details of which were released this week, revealed that almost one in seven business leaders do not take advice from anyone.

The survey found that one in five business managers and owners (20 per cent) value the advice of their accountants over all other contacts. Financial planners rated seventh on the survey value-chain behind mentors, staff members, family members, industry associations and friends, but ahead of lawyers.

Commenting on the outcome of the survey, BNZA general manager Mark Yarwood said a large number of business leaders were losing an opportunity to ease the pressure on themselves by seeking input from others, either in a professional or personal capacity.

“It is surprising that so many business people prefer to keep their cards close to their chest, overlooking the value that a third party can offer,” he said.

“Everyone can benefit from external knowledge and perspective, whether that comes from your partner, lawyer, financial planner or banker,” Yarwood said.
