The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has appointed James Bond to its newly created director of external affairs and investment position.

Bond will be responsible for ASFA's advocacy with federal parliamentarians and for policy issues affecting the economy and investments.

Bond has 20 years of experience in public policy, and six in the financial services industry. He is also currently the director at Equity Economics, and was most recently the chief economist at the Financial Services Council for over five years.

ASFA's chief executive, Pauline Vamos, said his previous work in the Commonwealth Treasury, and as a senior economic adviser and regular contributor to the media, would help with communicating ASFA's messages to both government and the public.

"Given the growth of the Australian superannuation system, the importance of how capital is allocated across the economy will continue to increase. In particular, impediments to long-term investing need to be removed and this will be an important focus of this role," Vamos said.
